About Rashtriya Military Schools


Rashtriya Military Schools are English medium residential Public Schools run by the Ministry of Defence to impart quality education to the wards of defence personnel and civilians from Classes VI to XII. These Schools are the founding members of the Indian Public Schools’ Conference (IPSC). Established in the year 1925, these Schools are among the oldest Public Schools in India. There are five Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) located at Chail in the Shimla Hills of Himachal Pradesh, Ajmer and Dholpur in Rajasthan, Belgaum and Bengaluru in Karnataka.

Cadets are admitted into Class VI & IX through a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted under the aegis of the Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).


Age Criteria


  • For Class VI (boys & girls both ) – 10 to 12 years as on 31 March in the year admission is being sought.
  • For Class IX (only boys) – 13 to 15 years as on 31 March in the year of admission. Admission to Class IX is not open for girls.


Reservation Policy


  • 70% of seats are reserved for the wards of serving and retired JCOs/OR those in the Army, Navy and Air Force.
  • 30% of seats are reserved for the wards of Officers & Civilians.
  • 27%, 15% and 7.5%of the seats in each category (excluding Officer Category) are reserved for OBC Non-creamy layer, SC and ST candidates respectively.
  • A total of 50 seats (Not more than 15 in either of the school) are earmarked forwards of personnel killed in action.




The aim of Rashtriya Military Schools is “to impart quality education and prepare the cadets to join the Defence Services”. The school also prepares boys who wish to join the Indian Armed Forces for the entrance examination of National Defence Academy. Boys between the age of 10–12 years are eligible for admission to school from Class VI onward. Alumni of the five RMS are known as Georgians after their founder father.

Rashtriya Military Schools’ environment allows students to not only excel in academics but also prepare them for sports. The infrastructure of the RMS provides cadets with the ground for sports like Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Football and Cricket, pool for Swimming, and courts for Lawn Tennis and Badminton. The school has a gymnasium. Mountain bikes have been procured for adventure rides. The school has roller skates and the cadets are encouraged to participate in adventure activities organised by the school. The school has been recognized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) as a Nodal Centre for Boxing. Regular training in boxing is given by them in the Old Assembly Hall.
