JNV Class 9 Lateral Entry Exam (LEST): Pattern, Subjects & Smart Prep Plan

The JNV Class 9 lateral entry exam, officially called the Lateral Entry Selection Test (LEST), is a 100-mark test for Class 8 students. It runs on an OMR sheet and lasts 2.5 hours. The paper covers English, Hindi, Mathematics and General Science. There is no negative marking, and the next test is set for 10 April 2027.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) offer free residential education across India. Class 9 seats, however, open only against vacancies. Therefore, every mark counts, and a clear plan matters. This guide explains the pattern, subjects, syllabus and a simple six-month study plan.

What Is the JNV Class 9 Lateral Entry Exam (LEST)?

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) conducts the Lateral Entry Selection Test every year. It fills vacant Class 9 seats in JNVs across districts. In other words, Class 8 students get a second chance to join a JNV after the Class 6 stage.

Navodaya Class 9 admission works district by district. A student can apply only in the district where they live and study. Hence, the competition depends on the vacant seats in that district’s JNV.

How the Merit List Is Prepared?

As per the notification reports, the merit list uses Mathematics, General Science and the better score of English or Hindi. In other words, only three of the four subjects count towards merit. Even so, attempt every section, because qualifying marks apply in all subjects. Always confirm the final rule in the official prospectus.

JNV Class 9 Syllabus: Subject-Wise Topics

The JNVST Class 9 syllabus follows the Class 8 level. However, NCERT books of Class 7 and Class 8 give the best base, because questions test core concepts.

Mathematics (35 Marks)

Focus on rational numbers, linear equations, quadrilaterals and mensuration. Then move to algebraic expressions, factorisation, exponents and proportion. Finally, cover data handling and probability.

General Science (35 Marks)

Revise crop production, microorganisms, coal and petroleum, and combustion. Next, study force and pressure, friction, sound and light. In addition, learn cells, reproduction and the conservation of plants and animals.

English and Hindi (15 Marks Each)

Expect reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and sentence correction. Tenses, voice and reported speech are common areas. Since only the better language score counts for merit, keep your stronger language sharp.

Note that the Class 6 test includes a Mental Ability section, but the LEST does not. If you also guide a younger child, read our Navodaya mental ability test strategy for that exam.
